North Carolina vs. NC State weather delay: When series finale will start

The North Carolina Tar Heels and NC State Wolfpack are excited to get going for the rubber match of their three-game weekend series. However, they’re going to have to wait past the scheduled 1:00 p.m. EST start time as the tarp is on the field and the game is in a rain delay.

The earliest the game is now going to be played is at 6:00 p.m. EST. That’s after they set a tentative new start time for 3:27 p.m. EST. The hope is that additional updates will be provided as they become available closer to first pitch. It is also still scheduled to be televised on the ACC Network.

The game will be played in Chapel Hill and is acting as senior day for the Tar Heels. That’s despite an upcoming midweek game still being on the schedule to be played at home next week for North Carolina.

On Friday night, North Carolina opened the series with a win on the back of another strong pitching performance from Jake Knapp. He threw eight innings, striking out four and only allowing one run in an 8-1 win. NC State’s bats woke up in game two, though. The Wolfpack jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before adding on late in their own 8-5 win.

NC State is coming into the game at 32-16 overall and 16-9 in ACC play. That’s good for second place in the conference standings, behind the Florida State Seminoles. Depending on how NC State and Florida State play today, the Wolfpack could finish the day in first place.

North Carolina, meanwhile, is sitting at 37-11 overall and 16-10 in ACC play. With a win, the Tar Heels would pass the Wolfpack in the standings. A loss, however, could see the Tar Heels fall as far as sixth in the conference standings, depending on results around the conference.

With just one weekend series left after this, those standings are incredibly important for the ACC Tournament. The top four seeds are going to get a bye to the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament. That’s a double bye. The teams finishing five through eight will get a single bye. The remaining teams are going to need to make deep runs to win the conference tournament.

NC State will return home for its final series of the season next weekend against the Stanford Cardinal. North Carolina, meanwhile, has a midweek game against the UNCW Seahawks and then they’ll play a weekend series against the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee.
