New North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick‘s relationship with his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, has been one of the leading news stories in recent weeks. During an appearance on Pardon My Take, former ESPN analyst Pablo Torre of Pablo Torre Finds Out explained why Belichick’s awkward interview with CBS jumpstarted the media frenzy around the legendary head coach’s romantic relationship.

“A lot of the conversation behind the scenes has always been, ‘Who’s gonna tell Bill? Who’s gonna tell Bill that this is a problem?'” Torre said. “The CBS thing was the No. 1 example to date of it being forced into a public forum in which every tabloid was demanding answers.”

In the interview on CBS Sunday Morning, CBS included a clip of Hudson interrupting the interview when the reporter, Tony Dokoupil, asked how the couple met. According to a report from TMZ, Hudson also stormed out of the interview at one point, causing a 30-minute delay.

While some fans had previously questioned the age gap between 73-year-old Belichick and 24-year-old Hudson, the uncomfortable interview left fans with countless questions; namely, how far does Hudson’s influence extend into Belichick’s professional life?

Belichick attempted to shut down some of these questions by releasing a statement, claiming that, prior to the interview, he and CBS had agreed to sticking to questions about his book. However, CBS refuted this claim.

“When we agreed to speak with Mr. Belichick, it was for a wide-ranging interview,” CBS’ statement read. “There were no preconditions or limitations to this conversation. This was confirmed repeatedly with his publisher before the interview took place and after it was completed.”

Torre has been one of the leading reporters on Belichick’s relationship with Jordon Hudson. Specifically, Torre reported that North Carolina “higher ups” told Belichick that Hudson could no longer come to the football program’s facilities. Torre also confirmed that Belichick had no pre-existing agreement with CBS on interview limitations.

“CBS itself was saying, ‘Hey, this statement that was released about the agreement that Jordon Hudson and Bill Belichick and CBS had, that’s a lie. That’s not true,” Torre said. “I can confirm, yes, there was no agreement on all that stuff. But that was really the tipping point that actually unlocked a lot of sourcing on this, which was good for me as much as I feared it at first.”

North Carolina refuted Torre’s claim that Hudson had been effectively banned from football facilities. However, the program did hire former Chicago Bears public relations director Brandon Faber this month.
