Notre Dame is busting out some special uniforms for their Saturday matchup with Cal in South Bend, as the Irish will rock green jerseys with the usual gold pants and helmet. Despite wearing this color combo in the past, the standard look for the Irish has become the navy blue and gold pairing.

The green jerseys are something new head coach Marcus Freeman said the Irish would showcase during his tenure. The look is the same as the green alternates that Notre Dame wore against Florida State in 2018 on Senior Day.

Announcing the look, the official Notre Dame football accounted said “this week we wear green.”

The Irish have dabbled with other green jersey looks since the turn of the century. In 2005, for the now-infamous Bush Push game, the Irish wore a green and gold getup — those jerseys reappeared several more times. There was also 2007 against USC, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the “Green Jersey Game.” On the road at Michigan Stadium in 2011, the white and gold away look featured green for the numbers and accents on the uniform.

And playing in front of the Green Monster at Fenway Park against Boston College in 2015, Notre Dame wore an all-green uniform.

After an 0-2 start to this season — and an 0-3 start to Freeman’s career as the Notre Dame head coach — maybe the green can provide a little luck of the Irish and help Notre Dame best Cal at 2:30 on NBC.

Notre Dame and Freeman teased this choice months ago during the offseason

Love them or hate them, they’re coming back. Notre Dame football will wear green jerseys against Cal on Sept. 17 according to a video released by the program’s main Twitter account Thursday.

The video portrayed Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman sitting at his desk inside the Guglielmino Athletic Complex on Notre Dame’s campus. He read tweets from fans complaining about how Notre Dame does not wear green jerseys often enough.

The first one read, “My favorite part about #IrishWearGreen is that the Irish don’t wear green.”

Freeman chuckled, nodded his head, smiled and looked at the camera. “Good point,” he said.

Freeman read nine more similar tweets then shouted down the hallway, “Hey Bass! Can we wear green jerseys for the Cal game?”

The video then showed a graphic advertising green jerseys for the 2:30 p.m. ET kickoff for the Irish’s second home game of the season. It’s been settled. The Irish will in fact wear green.
