Sam Hartman Breaks Down Marshmellow Tradition At Notre Dame, Why The Best Throw He's Seen | 01.31.24

Many former college stars were recently at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama trying to catch the eyes of NFL GMs, decision makers, and scouts. Luckily, On3’s Andy Staples was in attendance, chatting it up with many former college stars.

He happened to stumble upon some funny and interesting stories with a number of prospects. Former Notre Dame signal-caller Sam Hartman shared one of his favorite traditions at Notre Dame, and it had to do with marshmallows.

“So, a big tradition, Senior Night at Notre Dame is people throw marshmallows on the field. Don’t know why. Don’t know how. Alright. People are laughing listening. You’re gonna hear this story. So, we’re on the sideline. We have hot chocolate. It’s a cold game. I’m like out of the game. We’re winning. And from I would say 30-yards up probably row 40. A girl launches one. And I’m walking, I’m moving and it lands [in my cup.] She led the receiver. She threw me open across the sideline,” Hartman said.

“And honestly, the only thing you can do is chug your hot chocolate after that. And that got the crowd pretty fired up. It was cool. I think I’ve met her before at something else, but they were pretty fired up about it,” the former Fighting Irish signal-caller said.

The former Notre Dame star actually pointed to former Penn State corner Kalen King after he got him to bite on a pump fake, allowing Hartman to score.

Sam Hartman arrived in South Bend with plenty of hype as the No. 2-ranked transfer in the 2023 On3 Transfer Portal Rankings a year ago. It was an up-and-down season as he threw for 2,689 yards and 24 touchdowns as the Fighting Irish went 9-3 during the regular season.

Sam Hartman shattered several school records at Wake Forest

Over the course of his career, Hartman finished with 15,656 yards, 134 touchdowns, 49 interceptions and a 59.8% completion percentage. He finished his career at Wake Forest shattering several school records, including career passing attempts, completions, yards, and touchdowns.

Hartman also had the most touchdown passes in ACC history while suiting up for the Demon Deacons.

As a member of the Class of 2018, Hartman was a three-star recruit out of Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Oceanside Collegiate Academy, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 13 overall prospect in the state, the No. 54 quarterback in the class and the No. 776 overall prospect in the class.
