With a month and a half to go until the early signing period, Ohio State is holding on to the nation’s No. 2 recruiting class.

The Buckeyes have received commitments from more five-star prospects than any other school — five. But Ohio State isn’t done yet. Ryan Day and his staff are in the running for the premier offensive tackle in the 2024 cycle.

Lettermen Row Ohio State recruiting insider Alex Gleitman spoke with Josh Newberg on On3’s The Inside Scoop football recruiting show about the Buckeyes’ pursuit of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy five-star offensive tackle Jordan Seaton.

“Yeah, I’d say he is the No. 1 priority for Ohio State,” Gleitman said. “Offensive line recruiting has really been something that’s been I’d say the weak point for Ohio State. If they don’t win a national championship this year and the Big Ten, it’s because, in my opinion, the offensive line talent just isn’t good enough.

“And Greg Studrawa was I think a plus, positive above-average to good offensive line coach for Ohio State, but I would say he was a sub-par, below-average recruiter. And I think what you’re seeing in their offensive line room right now is a credit to that. They did lose three guys to the NFL — at least one of them in Luke Wypler that they maybe didn’t expect to lose early — but they lost three guys early to the NFL. That certainly didn’t help. But the recruiting just hasn’t been good enough. Justin Frye has been trying to pick up the pieces. This is really his first full cycle as the Ohio State offensive line coach. And I think they have a good base in the Armstrong twins and Ian Moore.”

Buckeyes looking for cornerstone on OL

Seaton is the No. 15 prospect in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking, while On3 rates him higher than any other major recruiting service — ranking him No. 7 overall and as the No. 1 offensive tackle.

“But what they’re really missing is kind of that cornerstone five-star stud offensive lineman, a guy who can play tackle which I think they feel Jordan Seaton can do for them,” Gleitman added. “So he’s the No. 1 priority. They probably could’ve had him on campus for a number of their games so far this season. But I think they feel that this is a recruitment where it’s kind of — the last impression may be the best impression. He’s a very impressionable kid, I think a lot of the visits he comes off, you hear him gush about that team just like he did with Oregon this past weekend. So I think Ohio State has tried to kick that can down the road to try to be as late of an official visit as they possibly can be. And they’re going to do a pretty good job of that.

“November 11, their night game against Michigan State, that’s the game he’s supposed to take his official visit. It’s going to be another big — probably their last and next big recruiting weekend given especially that it’s a night game, a lot of teams are out of the playoffs already potentially. So it’s easy to get to for a lot of the national guys like Jordan Seaton. So that’s going to be a huge opportunity for Ryan Day and Justin Frye. They feel like they’re right in the thick of things and that’s a guy that they have to bring jome if they want to improve the talent in that offensive line room.”
