According to Matt Zenitz of On3, Bryson Shaw, a safety for the Ohio State Buckeyes, has entered the transfer portal. He is the second defensive back to do so on Monday afternoon, with Lejond Cavazos also leaving the program.

Starting in 12 of the 13 games last season for the Buckeyes, Shaw was a key member of the defense for former defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs. Shaw recorded 59 tackles and 0.5 tackles for a loss while defending four passes and having an interception against the Michigan Wolverines.

Now, he will be looking for a new home and most likely be a popular player in the transfer portal.

Shaw was a three-star prospect coming out of high school according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting services. He ranked as the No. 61 safety in the country and No. 9 player from his home state of Maryland in the 2019 recruiting class. Programs such as the Penn State Nittany Lions, Tennessee Volunteers, and Wisconsin Badgers were other major programs to recruit Shaw as well.

New defensive coordinator Jim Knowles has been brought in and will be looking to play a new style of football. With two different defensive backs now entering the transfer portal, Knowles could be looking to get some of his guys onto the field early in his career.

Another Ohio State Buckeyes defensive back enters portal

According to Matt Zenitz of On3, Ohio State Buckeyes defensive back Lejond Cavazos has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Spending the past two seasons with head coach Ryan Day, Cavazos will be looking for more playing time going forward.

Cavazos played in 12 games during his time in Columbus, with 11 of them coming during the 2021 season. The defensive back was not able to gain a start but contributed eight tackles throughout the year. He also defended two passes, with one coming against the Minnesota Golden Gophers and Michigan State Spartans.

Coming out of high school, Cavazos was a four-star prospect according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting services. He ranked as the No. 362 overall player in the 2020 recruiting class and No. 55 within his home state of Florida after attending IMG Academy.

Now, Cavazos enters the transfer portal seeking a new home. Five other programs were considered finalists for the defensive back, with the Florida GatorsGeorgia BulldogsLSU TigersMiami Hurricanes, and Oregon Ducks falling short of Cavazos’ original commitment.
