Buckeyes’ guard and Ohio native, Meechie Johnson, will transfer from the program, he told On3 on Tuesday.

“Since a kid, I’ve always dreamed of playing at The Ohio State University, and I will always be able to say God gave me what my heart desired. First, I would like to thank God for all of the opportunities he’s allowed me to have and also my family and friends who have been there for me throughout this long journey! Second, I want to thank the entire coaching staff, strength coaches, trainers, alumni, and professors for contributing to me having a wonderful experience while attending The Ohio State University. With that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal,” Johnson said in a statement to On3.

The 6-foot-2, 172-pound point guard arrived at Ohio State as a consensus four-star prospect, ranking 91st nationally. Johnson graduated early from Garfield Heights High School in Cleveland to enroll early at Ohio State in December of 2020. After arriving in Columbus, Johnson played sparingly, less than six minutes per game. In the following season (21-22), Johnson saw his role expand, and played nearly 18 minutes a game. On the year, he averaged 4.4 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.
