Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and associate head coach and defensive line coach Larry Johnson made a trip out west Tuesday to visit one of their top remaining targets in Hero Kanu.

The two coaches stopped by Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) Santa Margarita Catholic to meet with the four-star defensive lineman.

Kanu called it a great visit and added that he loves spending time with them.

He is the No. 112 overall recruit in the nation, according to On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Kanu released a top five of Georgia, LSUNotre Dame, Ohio State and Oklahoma on Oct. 2, but that list has seen some attrition since then.

The German native has already said that LSU is out of the running for his signature because Ed Oregron would not be returning next season. Since he said, both Oklahoma and Notre Dame have seen their head coaches leave — with Brian Kelly replacing Oregron in Baton Rouge, La.

If LSU dropped out of the race due to its coaching change, it is very possible that Notre Dame and Oklahoma have done the same — although Kanu has not commented on the matter.

Either way, the moves have likely helped out the Buckeyes, who were considered the favorites by Chad Simmons before all the craziness of the last weekend.

Kanu has been very complimentary of the Buckeyes staff, especially Johnson, whom he has developed a great relationship with over the past months.

“I would say he’s done a great job, he’s been recruiting me really hard,” Kanu told Clemson Sports’ Joseph Hastings. “He’s calling me at least three times a week — coaches understand you shouldn’t call every single day because it’s gonna get stressful.”

Kanu will announce his decision at the All-American Bowl in January.
