Boston University has hilarious reaction to facing Oklahoma in NCAA Softball Tournament

Boston University was excited to hear its name announced in the NCAA Softball Tournament field on Sunday, until it realized who it was facing. The Terriers are headed to the Norman Regional to play Oklahoma, which has won four straight national championships.
Cameras captured the moment during the selection reveal show on ESPN2. Although the Boston University players let out a big cheer initially, they quickly fell into silence with their mouths agape and hands on their heads in the “surrender cobra” form.
Oklahoma enters this year’s tournament well-positioned to claim another crown. Although the Sooners did not get the No. 1 overall seed, which went to Texas A&M, they’re still No. 2 overall with a path to Oklahoma City.
OU finished 45-7 in its first season as a member of the SEC. The Sooners also advanced to the title game of the SEC Tournament to face Texas A&M, but the game was unfortunately canceled due to weather.
Boston University defeated Army in the Patriot League Softball Tournament Championship this past weekend. This is the second straight season that the Terriers have been placed in the Norman Regional and their 14th NCAA Tournament appearance overall. However, they did not face the Sooners in 2024, instead dropping two games to Oregon while beating Cleveland State.
BU also made a trip to Norman for a Regional in 2018. That year they did face OU, falling 9-0. The Sooners own a 4-2 all-time advantage in the series dating back to 1993.

This year’s Terriers team is led by Brooke Deppiesse, who leads the team with 72 hits and a .419 batting average. Kasey Ricard is their leading pitcher with a 1.97 ERA and 26-10 overall record. She’ll hope to have her best stuff as Boston University looks to pull off the upset against Oklahoma when the game begins at 5 p.m. CT Friday in Norman.
Committee Chair explains choice between No. 1 Texas A&M, No. 2 Oklahoma for 2025 NCAA Softball Tournament
The 2025 NCAA Softball Tournament will include a record number of teams from one conference with the SEC having 14 seeds. Nine of those were in top sixteen hosting regionals and seven of the top eight could be hosting super regionals, including the top two overall seeds in the field in No. 1 Texas A&M and No. 2 Oklahoma.
Kurt McGuffin, the selection committee chair, made an appearance on the special and, with that, would explain their reasoning that the Aggies (45-9) would be the top overall seed in the bracket as compared to the Sooners (45-7), who are the four-time defending champions. They went with A&M there over OU as they felt that the Aggies had a resumé with better results against their strength of schedule.
“Well, two quality opponents in Texas A&M and Oklahoma,” McGuffin said. “And I think what set apart Texas A&M was they have 19 Top-25 wins, which is number one in the country in wins in the Top-25. They also have had two quality non-conference wins versus Florida State and Texas Tech. I think those were the two pieces that set them to the No. 1 seed.”
