Brent Venables is off and running with Oklahoma. His first program-defining win came on in Dallas with the entire nation watching, taking down the Texas Longhorns. The Golden Hat will be heading back to Norman and to pain of last season’s matchup could not be further away. A huge victory for Venables as the Sooners move into the national picture.

Celebrations took place on the field following the game but Venables gave his postgame speech in the locker room. He is somebody who has been part of plenty of Red River Shootouts, dating back to his days as the Oklahoma defensive coordinator. Wins are on the resume, as are heartbreaking losses.

Venables told his team that what played out in front of him on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl was unlike anything he had seen before. A rivalry full of iconic moments on both sides, Venables will remember this one for a long time.

“In all my years of coaching, I’ve never been a part of one like that,” Venables said.

Heading into the game, Venables knew how important this one was for Oklahoma. While his future was not going to be decided by a win or loss, earning a victory goes a huge way toward where the Sooners want to be — both in the short term and moving forward. The dramatics only make the moment better.

The Oklahoma celebrations are going to go much further than the Cotton Bowl locker room. Heading back to Norman is going to be quite a fun journey before meeting up with Sooners fans back home. With a bye week ahead, Venables might even let his team enjoy it for a few extra days.
