A scary moment reportedly occurred in Norman on Thursday, with Gentry Williams collapsing during a workout. Medical staff immediately tended to Williams before transferring him to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, a positive update has emerged on the Oklahoma player’s health.

According to Carey Murdock of SoonerScoop, Williams has been released from the hospital and is set to spend the next week with his family. Oklahoma has not started spring practice yet, still going through offseason workouts. Encouraging news after scary reports earlier.

“Just heard from sources close to Gentry Williams,” Murdock said. “He’s been released from the hospital. He will head back to Tulsa with his family for spring break. Today was the final day of workouts before spring practices start March 22nd.”

Alyse Jones of KOCO reported the incident occurred during a tug-of-war competition between multiple Sooner players. Williams was also described to be in “good/stable condition” at the hospital in Jones’ report.

The status of Williams for the beginning of spring practice has not yet been released. For now, the main objective will be to make sure his health is trending in a positive direction.

Williams played in 12 games last season, all occurring during the regular season. While he came to Norman as an athlete, head coach Brent Venables has deployed Williams as a defensive back. Seven tackles and an interception were recorded.

Oklahoma releases statement after collapse

Oklahoma released a statement on Thursday evening but did not specifically disclose Williams’ name. They described the incident and confirmed the player in question has been released from the hospital.

At the end of this morning’s football team workout, one of our players experienced an exertional collapse and was immediately attended to by the team’s medical staff and transported to a local hospital for further care,” a statement read. “He has since been released and is heading home, where he will spend spring break with his family.

“He will undergo follow-up exams with team physicians before resuming athletic activities. We commend our medical staff that provided immediate and thorough care and are appreciative of all those who have expressed concern for him.”

Williams played high school football at Tulsa (OK) Booker T. Washington, where he was a four-star prospect.
