Elite 2025 TE Davon Mitchell commits to Oklahoma and moves into 2024 class

Davon Mitchell was ready, in multiple senses of the word.
On Saturday, the elite 2025 tight end out of Los Alamitos (Calif.) announced his commitment to Oklahoma and also made it official that he will reclassify and join the Sooners’ 2024 recruiting class.
Oklahoma beat out Miami and Alabama, two programs who gave the Brent Venables and Co. a serious run.
“When I was at Alabama in June, I could see myself there,” Mitchell told On3. “Then when I was at Miami a couple of weeks ago, they really gave me a lot to think about. Miami was up there, Alabama was too, but every time I would come back from a visit, I would go back to Oklahoma. It was constantly on my mind as the place I wanted to be and the best place for me.”
The Sooners had been on top for a while with Davon Mitchell
Mitchell grew up in Alabama and was a fan of the Crimson Tide early on. But after attending an OU game in middle school, the Sooners became his favorite school. When he blew up as a recruit and Oklahoma extended an offer, it was a game-changer.
He has visited six or seven times since then, and he loves what Brent Venables and his staff are building in Norman.
“They have a great coaching staff, they have a great program, they have a lot of history with tight ends and I love their S.O.U.L. Mission Coach Brent Venables has created,” Mitchell said. “Oklahoma has a different vibe for me. Since my freshman year, they have been a top school for me and it just stayed that way. Every time I went back, it felt like home.”
For now, Mitchell is in southern California after transferring to Los Al, but after growing up and playing for Allen (Texas), he’s very familiar with Sooner Country and can’t wait to get back.

“I love being around Norman,” he added. “The people are good, I love the staff and the players and I feel the love every time I am there. Coach Smitty [Jerry Schmidt, strength and conditioning] is one of the best to ever do it, my connection with Joe Jon Finely is deep and I love what Coach Venables’ vision is for the program. I am ready to put my trust in the guys on that staff with my development and my future.”
Ready to get started and play in the SEC
Prior to moving to California, Mitchell wouldn’t have been able to move into the 2024 class because of how many high school credits he was required to have for graduation in Texas. Transferring out west gave him the opportunity to move up a class, and he’s excited about the opportunity.
“I have been thinking about it for a while,” he said. “The thing that led to this decision is that I want to get to college as soon as possible, get developed, get coached up, ball out and get to the NFL.”
He plans to graduate in December and be able to enroll in January as part of the Sooners’ class that also features close friend and four-star quarterback Michael Hawkins. Mitchell is eager to get around the Sooners’ program and spend more time with Finley, Venables and the whole coaching staff.
“I have been talking to Coach Finley a lot,” he said. “He can get in touch with me through my coach, I call him a lot and we have the best relationship. I like how he coaches, I like his personality and he is easy for me to talk to. Then Coach Venables is the same. He is one I like talking to and I love his energy. The offense under Coach Jeff Lebby fits me, and my connection with all of the Oklahoma coaches is strong.”
