Oklahoma has made yet another splash on the recruiting trail, as it landed the commitment of Dayton (Ohio) Centerville four-star safety and former Michigan State pledge Reggie Powers on Saturday afternoon.

Powers is the No. 214 overall prospect and No. 16 safety in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

“I think the thing that stood out the most was the culture and atmosphere when I got there on gameday,” Powers told On3. “It is a very big football school that is very passionate about that. I loved all of the coaches and all the love I was getting there, it is full of great people and players.”

With the addition of the blue-chip safety, Oklahoma made a four-spot jump in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Ranking and now checks in at No. 8 and No. 6 in the SEC.

Sooners nearing 15 blue-chip commitments

Oklahoma’s class now consists of one five-star, 13 four-stars and 13 three-star prospects. Five-Star Plus+ defensive lineman David Stone headlines the class as the lone five-star recruit. He’s the No. 7 overall prospect and No. 1 defensive lineman in the cycle. Stone committed to the Sooners over Miami on Aug. 26.

Other top-100 pledges include Longview (Texas) four-star running back Taylor Tatum, Missouri City (Texas) Hightower four-star wide receiver Zion Kearney and Los Alamitos (Calif.) four-star tight end Davon Mitchell.

Tatum is the No. 1 running back in the cycle and the No. 8 player in the Lone Star State. Kearney is the No. 15 wideout, while Mitchell checks in as the No. 8 tight end in the cycle.

Powers joins other top-300 recruits in the class, including Melissa (Texas) four-star defensive lineman Nigel Smith II, Tulsa (Okla.) NOAH Homeschool four-star EDGE Danny Okoye, Odessa (Texas) four-star wide receiver Ivan Carreon, Gray (Ga.) Jones County four-star wide receiver Zion Ragins and Lewisville (Texas) four-star safety Jaydan Hardy.

Powers is the sixth defensive back commit for the Sooners. He joins the likes of Lewisville (Texas) four-star safety Jaydan Hardy, Queen Creek (Ariz.) Casteel four-star cornerback Jeremiah Newcombe and Tulsa (Okla.) Union three-star CB Devon Jordan in what’s set to be a loaded secondary room in Norman.

Four-star and five-star prospects are rated as ‘blue-chip’ prospects — Oklahoma’s class sits in the top 20 nationally in blue-chip percentage at 52%. The average distance of an Oklahoma recruit’s hometown to Norman is 883.7 miles and 22% of the class hails from the state of Oklahoma.
