After suffering a vicious hit last weekend against TCU, the status of Dillon Gabriel ahead of the Red River Showdown between Oklahoma and Texas has been a huge story.

Some clarity has finally been provided on the situation, as Gabriel was seen in shorts on the sidelines prior to the game. Evidently, the Sooners quarterback is out for Saturday’s game against Texas, not being able to go after ramping up his activity during warmups.

“Guys I’ve received word from Oklahoma that Dillon Gabriel is still in concussion protocol,” reported ESPN’s Katie George during the broadcast. “He is being evaluated daily moving forward.”

On the season thus far, Gabriel has amassed 1,215 passing yards and 11 passing touchdowns for the Sooners, throwing zero interceptions and adding 126 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns to his total, as well. Indisputably, he’s been an electric play-maker, even if he’s had a tough couple of weeks.

Moreover, Brent Venables is more than prepared for the revelation, as he discussed his plan for Oklahoma at quarterback earlier this week, revealing the Sooners prepared their top three quarterbacks for the game Saturday against Texas.

“I mean obviously (Davis Beville) is the one that went in last week, so we’ll have three quarterbacks taking reps this week just in case and see how the week goes,” said Venables. “By gametime, we’ll have that figured out – and I would assume even before then.”

Evidently, Venables did figure things out — Dillon Gabriel will be out, and it’ll be up to backups Davis Beville and General Booty to bring home a victory over Texas.

Moreover, Gabriel left last weekend’s game against TCU after suffering a vile looking hit while attempting to slide after a run.

After the play, Horned Frogs defender Jamoi Hodge was ejected for his contact with the Oklahoma quarterback’s helmet. Check out the play for yourself below, and be the judge on whether the hit was dirty or not.

Afterward, Hodge was distraught on the sidelines, almost brought to tears with a towel draped covering his head. He immediately regretted the hit, wishing to take it all back in a moment’s notice. Gabriel was able to walk off the field under his own power.

Gabriel was replaced with backup quarterback Davis Beville entered the game. Relying on the Sooners’ ground game, Oklahoma scored on the same drive, via Jovantae Barnes taking a 20-yard rush to the house.

Oklahoma trailed 34-17 at the time of the injury and looked to make an improbable comeback against TCU, which was obviously not in the cards for the Sooners.
