Just five days after Oklahoma baseball’s season ended, the program has a job opening. On Friday, Sooners assistant coach Clay Overcash stepped down from his position.

Overcash was an assistant at Oklahoma for five years, serving as the Sooners’ recruiting coordinator and catchers coach. Prior to his time at Oklahoma, Overcash was a scout for the Chicago White Sox for 18 years.

Overcash found success as a talent scout. In 2005, Overcash co-founded The Sandlot Sox Organization; a baseball club out of Tulsa, Okla. Before closing the program in 2017, Overcash witnessed 64 players from the Sandlot be selected in the MLB Draft.

In the past, Overcash only has had positive things to say about Oklahoma.

It was awesome coming to Tulsa. The biggest thing was the change in culture, the change in people. Everything kind of slowed down from the big city of Charlotte, North Carolina, and the big city lights, the hustle and bustle, the traffic jams, all that stuff. Coming out to Oklahoma, life slowed down and gave me a chance to grow as a person and slow down and see who I was,” Overcash told “The Oklahoman” in 2018.

Overcash’s last game with the program was a let-down. Oklahoma fell 8-5 against East Carolina in the NCAA Tournament Regionals. In the contest, Oklahoma recorded 11 hits in 34 at-bats, but ultimately fell to the Pirates.

Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson will be an unfamiliar territory without Overcash by his side next year. Nonetheless, the Sooners coach will look for an improvement after a disappointing postseason.

“We’ll go back, regroup.  We got a lot of nucleus guys, we’ve got a lot of young guys coming in,” Johnson said following the team’s loss against East Carolina. “Try to put the pieces together, get some more depth, and continue to grow in our culture.”
