Mike Gundy's son, Gavin, calls out Oklahoma State reporter in defense of his father

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy has taken a lot of heat on social media after an embarrassing 69-3 loss against No. 6 Oregon on Saturday. But his son, Gavin, came to his defense.
With many Cowboys alums venting their frustrations, Gavin Gundy couldn’t stay silent. He quoted a post on X from OSU alum and co-host of the Pistols Firing podcast Carson Cunningham, who tweeted in the first quarter his disappointment in the Cowboys’ performance after they went down 13-0 within the first two minutes of the game.
“Imagine being this pathetic,” Gavin Gundy wrote. “You will never understand the size of balls it takes to do what he does… and how Oklahoma State would be completely irrelevant without him. So you can sit there and tweet all you want but you will never know what it takes to be successful in life.”
The loss for the Cowboys was one of their worst in program history. The 66-point margin of defeat trailed only a 67-0 loss to Oklahoma in 1907 and a 75-0 loss to the Sooners in 1904.
It’s been an abysmal past year for Oklahoma State, which finished 3-9 last season for its worst record in Mike Gundy’s tenure. Yet Gavin Gundy remained steadfast in his opinion that the program would not be where it is today without his father.

There’s certainly truth in that statement. Mike Gundy is the winningest coach in program history and has led the Cowboys to a winning record in all but two of his 20 seasons at the helm. He was also a quarterback at the school from 1986-89, helping OSU to back-toback 10-win seasons in 1987 and 1988.
“Mike Gundy IS Oklahoma State football,” Gavin Gundy continued. “Period. As QB, he set records in the Barry Sanders era. As coach, he stacked 160+ wins, 19 straight bowls, a Big 12 title, two Fiesta Bowls, multiple Top-10 finishes, & sent dudes to the NFL year after year. He’s the winningest coach in OSU history & the most important name this program has EVER had. Without him, you’d have nothing to brag about, nothing to watch, nothing to cry about.”
Regardless, Oklahoma State can’t afford to dwell on the past if the program continues on its current trajectory. Mike Gundy will have to prove he is capable of winning now, and thankfully Oklahoma State has a bye next week before facing Tulsa on Sept. 19. Hopefully that will give both Gundy and the players ample time to reflect on this loss and respond.
