Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg disputes reported contract extension following Mike Gundy firing

Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg declined to confirm reports that he had received a contract extension from the university. Weiberg spoke publicly Tuesday after the announcement that the Cowboys had fired football coach Mike Gundy.

The first question the AD received after his opening statement was not regarding Gundy, however, but asking about Weiberg’s contract. He initially shot down the question.

“We’re not here to talk about my deal,” he said.

Pressed for a yes or no answer, Weiberg then commented that the deal was not completed at the current moment. He also reaffirmed his confidence level in his relationship with the school.

“No. That is not something that’s completed and that’s something that I’m not worried about at this time,” Weiberg said. “I feel very good about where I’m at. I feel great about my relationship with President Hess and his leadership of this university. Feel great about our board and the support from the board. I’m not worried about that today.”

Weiberg had been working on a new contract with Oklahoma State since June. He has been the athletic director at Oklahoma State since 2021. His hires since then include women’s basketball coach Jacie Hoyt, men’s basketball coach Steve Lutz and wrestling coach David Taylor.

His previous hires have gone on to enjoy success, with Hoyt taking the Cowgirls to the NCAA Tournament in two of her three seasons so far. Taylor helped coach Wyatt Hendrickson and Dean Hamiti Jr. to NCAA titles this past season.

Finding a replacement for Gundy, however, could prove to be his biggest hire yet. Gundy is the winningest coach in program history with a 170-90 overall record since taking over in 2005. He also has one Big 12 Championship and a 12-6 record in bowl games, including two Fiesta Bowl wins. He was named the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year in 2011 after directing Oklahoma State to a 12-1 record.

However, since playing in the Big 12 title game in 2023, the program has been on a massive free fall. The Cowboys went 3-9 in the 2024 season and failed to win a single conference game. They have lost 11 straight games against FBS opponents dating back to last year.

Now Chad Weiberg will get to work on the coaching search as he hopes to get the Cowboys football program moving back in an upward direction. As far as his contract, expect more updates on that to come at a later date.
