Several things have been or are now unsettled as far as athletics this year at Oklahoma State. However, the ‘Pokes got some stability with the announcement out of their athletic department on Friday morning.

The Cowboys announced in a release this morning that they’ve signed a four-year extension for AD Chad Weiberg. That deal was approved by Oklahoma State University and the A&M Board of Regents.

“The Oklahoma State University/A&M Board of Regents has approved a new, four-year contract for OSU Athletic Director Chad Weiberg, ensuring continuity in leadership for Cowboy Athletics as the landscape of college sports continues to evolve,” the press release out of Stillwater read. “The decision reinforces the university’s commitment to Weiberg’s vision and strategic direction for the athletic department.”

“Chad is providing strong, steady leadership during one of the most transformative periods in college athletics history,” OSU President Jim Hess said in the statement. “He has the ability to navigate complex challenges and keep our student-athletes and programs at the forefront.”

Weiberg, who had not been under contract since the summertime, also commented as part of the release of his new extension today. He thanked those involved in reaching this agreement and his commitment to continue working toward the future in his athletic department at Oklahoma State.

“I thank the Board of Regents and President Hess for their continued confidence in our leadership and vision for OSU Athletics,” Weiberg said. “Oklahoma State is a special place, and our coaches and staff are committed to ensuring our student-athletes have every resource and opportunity to compete at the highest level. The future is bright for Cowboy and Cowgirl Athletics.”

Weiberg has been the Cowboys’ athletic director since July of 2021, as well as Oklahoma State Vice President, after having been a Deputy AD. That has had him in charge of the athletics department throughout the changes we’ve seen in college sports over the past four years, since his promotion, whether it be NIL or the NCAA Transfer Portal, or the arrival of revenue-sharing since this year’s approval of the House Settlement.

As for athletics, Weiberg had made a handful of hires for four programs at Oklahoma State. The Cowboys have also seen their share of success on the field. The school has won three national titles in various sports, won multiple conference titles in the Big 12, and consistently finished in the Top 30 in each of its years there in the Directors’ Cup.

This is most notable as the ‘Pokes continue a coaching search following the firing of Mike Gundy just over a month ago on September 23rd. Gundy was relieved, after a 1-2 start, with a 66-point loss at No. 6 Oregon and following that with a home loss to Tulsa. Now, though, with Weiberg signed longer-term as athletic director, Oklahoma State can more effectively continue the search for its next coach.

Weiberg had done a decent job over his first four years as athletic director. Now, after a few months between his two deals, the Cowboys have given him four more to remain in the role as Oklahoma State’s AD.
