Brandon Weeden has an idea of what qualities he wants to see in the next Oklahoma State football coach. The Cowboys fired longtime coach Mike Gundy on Tuesday after a 1-2 start to this season and their coaching search is now underway.

Weeden, who played quarterback at OSU from 2008-11, spoke with ESPN’s Lauren Sisler regarding his thoughts on the opening. Sisler relayed them during Saturday’s broadcast of the Cowboys’ game against Baylor, revealing that Weeden mentioned Zac Robinson as a candidate he likes.

“Brandon Weeden said a lot of the same things. He said obviously being an offensive guy here, they might need a coach that’s younger, a hungry coach that can handle all these NIL relations and energy building,” Sisler reported. “Personally, he said, ‘I’m leaning toward the offensive side of the football. But whoever it is, they need to bring the juice and not treat OSU as a stepping stone job.’ That was key for him.

“He mentioned Zach Robinson being someone. Former quarterback, NFL coach now, as someone being floated around. He felt like he might be a good fit.”

Robinson is a name that many people have mentioned as a potential candidate to replace Gundy. He played quarterback for the Cowboys from 2006-09 and is currently the offensive coordinator of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.

Robinson has spent six seasons as an assistant in the NFL, including the previous five with the Los Angeles Rams. However, he has never been a head coach in his career at any level.

Still, the connection with him being a former Cowboys player has led many fans to believe he would have more excitement and loyalty to the program than the average candidate. Weeden isn’t the only former OSU player to endorse him, as received Dez Bryant also gave his stamp of approval.

“Oklahoma State, let’s make Zac Robinson the head coach!” Bryant tweeted Tuesday afternoon, shortly after the news of Gundy’s firing was made official.

Regardless of who is ultimately chosen, they will face a tall task in replacing Gundy. He is the program’s all-time winningest coach with a record of 170-90 and is largely credited with putting the Cowboys on a national level as a program.

Although it ended sour, OSU still owes a lot to Gundy what how he helped elevate football to a level it wasn;t at before he arrived. That in mind, the Cowboys will want to take their time with this coaching search as they identify the candidate that is right for them.
