Dan Lanning trolled Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy again Monday when asked about the game by Barstool SportsBrandon Walker. The game was two weeks ago, but Oregon rolled the Cowboys 69-3 and followed it up with a 34-14 win over Northwestern in their Big Ten opener.

Gundy made comments about Oregon’s NIL spending compared to what Oklahoma State can do. Lanning simply said the Ducks take advantage and utilize their resources.

Turns out, the talent on the field had a huge disparity as well. So, Lanning took one more parting shot, having a little more fun with the exchange with Gundy.

“His numbers were off Brandon, it was more like $100 million (that) we spent last year. No, it wasn’t, (but) his numbers were off,” Lanning said on Wake Up Barstool. “But look, in my position, you’re going to use any fuel you can to motivate your team, right? And sometimes you’re looking for it, and sometimes it just reveals itself. And we had an opportunity to do that.

“We didn’t score in the fourth quarter. You know, it wasn’t a situation where we’re just trying to run up the score. We’re trying to go play good football, winning football, and our guys executed well that day. So ultimately, it was, you know, it was a fun experience for us, but an opportunity to grow and get better.”

Gundy claimed that Oregon would have to pay “a lot of money” to keep quarterback Dante Moore on their roster beyond this season. He also took aim at the Ducks for the amount they spent on their roster and suggested they should schedule tougher opponents.

“I think Oregon spent close to $40 (million) last year alone,” Gundy said. “So, that was just one year. Now, I might be off a few million. …Oregon is paying a lot, a lot of money for their team. From a nonconference standpoint there’s coaches saying they should (play teams with similar budgets).”

Lanning, of course, used it as motivation and it worked, and then some! Moving forward, Oregon has rival Oregon State this weekend before travelling to Penn State.

“I told our team right before the game that it never requires extra motivation for an opportunity to go out and kick ass, but it never hurts when somebody pours gasoline on the fire,” Lanning said. “I felt like these guys wanted the chance to go prove who they are. I’ve got a lot of respect for coach Gundy, but at his press conference, he’s probably saying, ‘See, I told you so.’ That’s probably what his comment is.

“But that doesn’t change the way we have to play to be a winning football team. We have good players. One of our best, Bryce Boettcher, played good today. He came here for a backpack and a t-shirt. So I’m really proud of those guys on our team that have developed into great players.”
