James Franklin has his spatula at the ready. On Friday, the Penn State head coach made a major recruiting splash, flipping four-star Venice (Fla.) cornerback Elliot Washington from Alabama.

The 5-foot-11, 187-pounder is the No. 102 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Washington had been committed to the Crimson Tide since January 31, when he chose Nick Saban and Co. over  Georiga, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State. But the Nittany Lions — along with others — continued to pursue him.

He took official visits to both Penn State and Michigan State last month, with Franklin’s staff making a major impression on him.

“What stood out is how down-to-earth Coach Franklin and his staff were with everyone,” Washington told On3’s BlueWhiteIllustrated. “They seem real and upfront about what their expectations are as a student-athlete. They want to win championships and continue to be an elite program.”

He joins a Penn State class that now features 11 blue-chip prospects and ranks No. 7 nationally in the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings.
