Penn State‘s season went from bad to worse Saturday afternoon when it dropped its third consecutive game to Northwestern 22-21. The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 3 in the country just three weeks ago, but have since dropped games to No. 6 Oregon, UCLA and Northwestern.

In the loss, quarterback Drew Allar suffered what looked to be an ankle injury in the final minutes of play. He exited the game and was replaced by backup Ethan Grunkemeyer. Postgame, James Franklin revealed that Allar will miss the rest of the season.

Allar was originally tended to on the sideline, but was then carted to the locker room. Apparently, his season is now over.

Trailing 22-21 with 3:31 remaining in the game, Allar was tackled and stayed down tending to his ankle. He was tackled short of the first down, which brought up a 4th & 3 from the Penn State 32-yard line. The Nittany Lions went for it on fourth down trailing by one, but Grunkemeyer was tackled for no gain. Northwestern took over and ran out the clock, earning the upset victory.

Allar entered the season with massive expectations, but he never quite looked like the player he was expected to be this season. In six games this season, the senior passed for 1,100 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions. After leading his teams to three straight wins to open the season, he now ends his college career on a three-game skid.

“(Offensive Coordinator) Andy Kotelnicki is a brilliant offensive mind,” ESPN‘s Pete Thamel said on the ‘College GameDay Podcast‘ earlier this week. “We saw what he did with Jalon Daniels at Kansas. But a lot of his stuff goes this way — horizontally. And if you’re at Penn State, with better talent, you need to go this way — vertically. So it just seems to have been a bit of an odd fit between Andy and Allar. That doesn’t mean it’s either of their faults — it’s just that they haven’t married it up right.”

With Allar’s season coming to an end, his next stop will now be the National Football League.
