James Franklin provides insight on policy which led to Kaytron Allen absence in first half

There was a notable Penn State player missing on Saturday vs. Northwestern. Running back Kaytron Allen did not play in the first half but no reason was ever given by head coach James Franklin. As it turned out, it was a sloppy game overall in Happy Valley, with or without Allen on the field.
Franklin was asked about Allen’s absence from the game but was not willing to give up information. He said whether there is an injury within the program or some kind of discipline going on, there is no benefit to providing insight. Apologizing to the media for it, Franklin understands how that can put them in a “tough position.”

“I know everyone has different approaches with these things,” Franklin said. “I don’t get into injuries and I don’t get into internal decisions. I know that sometimes put you guys into a tough position and I apologize for that. But again, I would rather keep those decisions internal. Whether it is injuries. Whether it’s behavior modification. Whatever it may be. Rotations.
“We’re going to keep those internal. I know that’s tough on you guys and I apologize for that but I don’t think it’s anybody else’s business for those decisions to be made publicly.”
As to why Franklin isn’t comfortable releasing internal information, he said a couple of reasons. First, the opposing team could gain a competitive advantage. Second, Franklin is not looking to embarrass his players even more than they have within the program.

“Either it doesn’t help us from a competitive standpoint or it’s undue embarrassment when there’s already a level of punishment happening.”
Allen wound up with 21 carries, despite only playing a half. He finished with 86 yards but no touchdowns.
James Franklin excited to get Coziah Izzard back for Penn State defense
Penn State defensive tackle Coziah Izzard made his season debut against Northwestern and is officially back in the rotation for the Nittany Lions going into the bye week. James Franklin and the team don’t play again until they face No. 4 Michigan on the road on Oct. 15.
Franklin discussed getting the redshirt sophomore back and its impact on the defense on Tuesday.
“He’s a guy who’s played a lot of football for us,” Franklin said. “Whenever you’re able to get a guy who’s had production in major games in the Big Ten and get him back in the rotation, it helps. It creates more competition at the position, it keeps guys healthy, and all those types of things. It’s obviously a big boost for our defense and defensive line.”
