Garwey Dual, a four-star point guard in the senior class, has re-committed to Providence, he told On3.

When the 6-foot-5 prospect originally committed to the Friars last June, Ed Cooley was the head coach. However, following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, Cooley accepted the head coaching job at Georgetown, after Patrick Ewing was let go. Once Cooley left for the Hoyas, Garwey Dual, the Friars’ highest-rated high school commitment, decided to reopen his recruitment.

Former George Mason head coach Kim English is now the head coach at Providence College. One of the main focuses when taking a head coaching job is player retention. English has been able to do just that — with the current Providence roster — as well as resecuring Dual from the reaching hands of Georgetown, St. John’s, as well as others.

Dual on re-committing to Providence

“I feel like the reason I gravitated towards coach Kim (English) is that for one, he’s been in the NBA,” Dual said to On3. “He knows exactly what it takes. We all know just because you play, that doesn’t mean you’re automatically a good coach. So when I saw he had an elite feel for both things, I just knew then and there that he could help get me get to the next level. His work ethic is inspiring every time we speak. He’s either on the way to the gym or in the gym and that’s just something that made me gravitate to him even more!”

English securing Dual’s recommitment is just one of the keys to having a successful season in year one. Two of the Friars‘ best – Bryce Hopkins (15.8 PPG) and Devin Carter (13 PPG) – have both announced their intentions to return to the school. English will also bring over three of the more talented players from his George Mason team — Josh Oduro (15.6 PPG), Davonte “Ticket” Gaines (7.3 PPG), and rising sophomore Justyn Fernandez, a former four-star recruit. English also retained three-star Providence signee Donovan Santoro and former George Mason signee Richard Barron, a fellow three-star recruit.

Scouting Report

“Garwey Dual is an intriguing prospect with a lot of tools. At 6-5, he is a long-armed paint-touch point guard, he has a lot of shift in his handle and very quick-twitch. Dual needs strength, which may help cut down his turnovers. His physical tools are advanced and he is still growing into the speed of the game. The jump shot is streaky, better off the bounce than the catch. He has a very shifty cross over and change of direction handle. Needs strength and continued development, a lot of upside.” – On3’s Jamie Shaw
