Booger McFarland voices disappointment with LaNorris Sellers following South Carlina loss to Oklahoma

LaNorris Sellers entered the 2025 season with a ton of hype surrounding his name. Conversations about the Heisman Trophy even took place from the outside, believing South Carolina could be something special. Alas, talking season expectations have not turned into real results when the games matter.
Saturday delivered another tough result as South Carolina fell at home to Oklahoma. This brought ESPN’s Booger McFarland to express his disappointment with Sellers due to his play.
“LaNorris Sellers hasn’t quite been what I thought he would be this year,” McFarland said via X. “Add him to the list of quarterbacks that have disappointed.”
A decent day was put together for Sellers from an efficiency standpoint. He completed 17 of 26 throws but nothing else looked pretty. Only 124 yards show up on the stat sheet, plus South Carolina’s lone touchdown of the day to Nyck Harbor. A yards per attempt of 4.7 is well below what any offensive coordinator is going to want from their quarterback.
Looking at the whole season, Sellers was riding high after the season-opening win against Virginia Tech. Exactly 64% of his throws were getting completed entering Saturday for 1,010 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. You always have to take his feet into consideration too, adding 117 yards and a score on 70 carries.

Now, there is a lot more to discuss with the Gamecock offense than Sellers. Head coach Shane Beamer made a coaching change leading into the Oklahoma game at offensive line. Lonnie Teasley lost his job, while Shawn Elliott added the unit to his run game specialist and tight end coach duties.
OU did a great job of consistently getting pressure. Not just when Sellers dropped back to pass either, finding ways to stop the South Carolina run game. Overall, not much went right in the 26-7 loss.
Still, a lot of attention is going to be put on Sellers. Sometimes, quarterbacks receive all of the praise when the team wins and are on the brunt end when losses begin to pile up. Sellers currently finds himself as the latter with South Carolina now under .500.
An opportunity to get back in good graces immediately comes in front of the home crowd. South Carolina hosts Alabama next Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Sellers almost pulled off the upset last year in Tuscaloosa, hoping for a different fortune to silence the doubters.
