Gavin Casas leaves SEC Tournament game with right hand injury

South Carolina senior Gavin Casas exited the team’s SEC Tournament showdown against Kentucky in the bottom of the 5th inning with a broken hamate bone in his right hand. Casas made an early impact for the Gamecocks, recording a three-run home run and a highlight catch in the field.
Casas began to show signs of discomfort after hitting a foul ball. When the umpire felt his hand, he showed visible pain. He did not finish his at-bat. Talmadge LeCroy pinch hit and Kentucky pitcher Cameron O’Brien struck him out to end the inning.

Casas’ 429-foot three-run shot came in the bottom of the second inning to give the Gamecocks a 3-2 lead. After the pivotal play, South Carolina head coach Mark Kingston showered praise on Gavin Casas and his fellow Gamecocks.
“That just speaks to our entire team,” Kingston said. “I keep getting asked, how are you going to bounce back after a loss. These are very resilient kids. I think we forget that sometimes. And, so the fact that he was able to hit that three-run homer after the tough night last night, very happy for him to bounce back like that.”
The winner between South Carolina and Kentucky will face off against LSU tomorrow at noon ET on the SEC Network. LSU previously defeated both teams in the conference tournament.
