After a brief search, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer settled on TCU offensive coordinator Kendal Briles to fill the position in Columbia. Briles is heading into a strong opportunity with a superstar quarterback in LaNorris Sellers, who will look to reach his full potential in his third season as the starter in 2026.

Sellers originally burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman in 2024, passing for 2,534 yards and 18 touchdowns. Carolina finished the season with a 9-4 record and looked to be a perennial College Football Playoff contender in 2025, even opening the season ranked No. 13 in the AP Poll Rankings.

Things, however, went off the rails for Beamer’s team this season, as it finished with a 4-8 record and missed the postseason. Sellers, who also dealt with the injury bug some this season, passed for 97 fewer yards and five fewer touchdowns this season. During an introductory press conference on Friday, Briles revealed that he was excited to work with Sellers.

“Once we got to where we knew this thing was done, then I had an opportunity to speak with him on the phone,” Briles said. “It’s really more the offense fitting around him, though. He’s the quarterback. He’s touching the ball every single snap.”

“I’m not going to ask him to go out there and do something he’s not great at. We’re gonna build the offense around him and the rest of the personnel and do the things that he’s really good at. We want him to be comfortable. He’s out there with people running full speed at him with a bad attitude and trying to get after him. So we’re gonna do the things he’s really comfortable with, and I’m really excited to work with him. He seems like a great kid.”

Since 2015, Briles has served as the offensive coordinator at Baylor, FAU, Houston, Florida State, Arkansas, and TCU. In that time, he has coached talented quarterbacks such as Jarrett Stidham, Clayton Tune, Feleipe Franks, KJ Jefferson, Josh Hoover, and Chandler Morris. Sellers was projected to be one of the top quarterbacks selected in the 2026 NFL Draft prior to the season, but it now appears that he will likely head for professional football in 2027.

Sellers, once again, will likely head into the 2026 season as one of the most anticipated quarterbacks in the Southeastern Conference.
