Shane Beamer won’t be caught playing golf at this time of year. Especially after the controversy surrounding Auburn‘s Hugh Freeze this offseason, the South Carolina head coach is playing it safe.

Or at least, he isn’t posting his golf scores. Beamer joked with reporters at the annual Birdies with Beamer event about his golf game.

“I’ll get in trouble,” Beamer said. “There’s another coach that’s gotten in trouble in this league. I saw Kirby (Smart) on vacation and he asked if i was playing golf. I said, ‘yeah.’ He’s like, ‘Whatever you do, don’t post your score, man. But I’m not going to get into specifics on that. … But that’s the problem with my golf game is that I played Friday, and I put the clubs up and I won’t touch them again until late January, early February.”

According to a recent report from AL.com that came out this summer, Freeze was found to have played significantly more than his fellow SEC coaches. In the month of June alone, Freeze got on the course 10 times, AL.com found. They also say he has recorded more than 20 rounds throughout the calendar year already, showing a handicap of 7.4.

Although, Beamer did come up in second place — but he was only recorded to have played three times in June. In comparison, Georgia‘s Kirby Smart sat at zero.

The Auburn head coach responded to the the criticism over his time on the course during an appearance on David Pollack’s podcast, See Ball Get Ball. Much of the criticism is centered around the slow start Freeze and the Tigers are off to on the 2026 recruiting trail.

“This is that time where people are looking for things to write about,” Freeze said. “And I do love golf. I enjoy playing, but what people don’t realize is, you know, I assure you that I never missed a camp day or a recruiting day but if camp got over at three o’clock one day, and Jill (Freeze’s wife) and I go out at 4:30, we absolutely might do that.

“And I’m not apologizing for that part of it. But my focus is 100% on getting Auburn in that win column this fall.

South Carolina and Auburn won’t meet on the football field this season. Based on recent events, it’s unlikely the two SEC coaches will be meeting each other on the golf course anytime soon, either.
