South Carolina will likely be without star defensive back Nick Emmanwori this weekend against Furman, with Emmanwori listed as doubtful after suffering an injury in the season opener.

Coach Shane Beamer reiterated Emmanwori’s status on Wednesday on an SEC teleconference call.

“We got an injury report yesterday that said he was doubtful this week,” Beamer said. “That hasn’t changed.”

Emmanwori was a 2022 freshman All-American and a Freshman All-SEC selection after putting together a strong campaign. He logged 85 tackles, a tackle for a loss and a pass defended.

Beamer provided a more full update on Emmanwori on Tuesday.

“I would say that Nick Emmanwori is doubtful this week,” he said. “I would say Nick is probably doubtful. If you asked him he would probably say that he’s playing. He didn’t practice (Tuesday) so he would need to do something (Wednesday) for us in practice. We’ll see. We meet as a staff at 4 o’clock, I’ll have a better idea. But I would say right now Nick is doubtful.”

Other South Carolina injuries

Unfortunately for the Gamecocks, the injury report the team had to put out following a loss to the Tar Heels was lengthy. Worse, there was a season-ending injury.

Edge defender Mo Kaba will miss the season for the second straight year.

A handful of other players are doubtful for the upcoming game against Furman after getting banged up against North Carolina.

“It was a physical game last week,” Beamer said. “Would say that Markee Anderson is doubtful this week. I would say that Nick Emmanwori is doubtful this week. I would say that JT Geer is doubtful this week. I would say that David Spaulding is doubtful this week. Cason Henry is out this week. And everybody else practiced today and should be good to go.

“(Antwane Wells) was good, I asked him early on in practice, ‘How you feeling, what’s your mindset this week?’ He said, ‘I’m playing and don’t even try to limit me in practice today,’ is essentially what he said. (Ahmarean Brown) got hit in the ribs a little bit but he practiced today and was fine. I would say all of those guys that did not finish the game the other night or came out of the game for different reasons all of those guys should be fine. Nobody else missed practice today that I didn’t already mention.”
