Shane Beamer reveals focal point for LaNorris Sellers at quarterback in 2025

LaNorris Sellers was a godsend for Shane Beamer’s South Carolina team in 2024. Now, the mission for the Gamecocks is helping their quarterback ascend to the next level.
One of the ways the head coach is helping his quarterback evolve is the hiring of Mike Shula as South Carolina’s new offensive coordinator. He heaped praise on the longtime NFL assistant during an appearance on Always College Football with Greg McElroy, Beamer revealing what some of the focal points have been for Shula and Sellers ahead of the 2025 campaign.
“You’re exactly right about Mike Shula, he’s been awesome. He’s made [Sellers] better already,” Beamer stated, revealing Shula cultivating a pre-snap plan for Sellers has been a major focal point. “Anytime you’ve got a guy that has not only played the position, but played the position in the SEC, like Coach Shula did, it’s a huge benefit for LaNorris. And then the fact that Mike has coached quarterbacks at a high level and coordinated offenses at a high level in the NFL for a long time, it’s really been good for LaNorris, and LaNorris will be the first to tell you that he needed that, as well.”
“They’ve really attacked that. Just the timing of drops and knowing protections and when you’re picked up and when you’re not protected and when you have to get rid of the ball and where to go, because there’s a lot of plays that, you know, he made with his feet last year. Some were just, you know, we didn’t protect very well and he got hit. But there were times where maybe he wasn’t protected and realized that a little bit too late and got hit, got himself out of trouble and turned it into a 40-yard run or pass.
“I’m all for those, but I’d love the, you know, the quickness and the decision-making and things like that to be even more efficient, which it will be. I mean, it’s his second year as a starter. He’s still young. It’s only his third year in our program. He knows there’s a lot of work to do, but he’ll just be so much more experienced.

“We’ve tried to help him a little bit with, with Mike taking over as the coordinator. We haven’t changed the terminology, but we’ve certainly, you know, tweaked some things to hopefully make it, you know, even more efficient and easier for LaNorris and the rest of the offensive guys going forward.”
Of course, Beamer doesn’t want to change Sellers’ style of play too much. He was incredible to watch in 2024, passing for 2,534 yards and 18 touchdowns, while also rushing for 674 yards and seven touchdowns, becoming one of the more dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks in the entire nation.
If Mike Shula can get the most out of LaNorris Sellers, the sky is the limit for the South Carolina star in 2025. The Heisman, a trip to the College Football Playoff and competing for a national title are all possible for the Gamecock star. We’ll see if Shane Beamer can steer the ship in the right direction this coming season.
