South Carolina dropped to 3-4 on the season following Saturday’s 26-7 loss to No. 14 Oklahoma at home. The Gamecocks were held scoreless in the second half and were held to 54 rushing yards on the afternoon.

The loss marked the second game in a row where South Carolina’s offense failed to find the end zone after halftime. When asked after the game whether there should be a change in terms of calling plays, head coach Shane Beamer snapped back at the question he was asked.

“I made a change last week,” Beamer told GamecockCentral’s Jack Veltri. “Every week, we’re continuing to look at how to be better. And every week, I do that. And every week, I will continue to do that, continue to evaluate that.”

Since a change had already been made, a follow-up question was asked. What gives you hope that the play calling will improve?

“What gives me hope? I see the way we practice during the week,” Beamer responded.

“What gives me hope? I see the number of guys that we had out today, that I wasn’t even sure was going to be able to play, that fought their asses off to get back out there and get healthy and be able to play today.”

It’s a frustrating loss for the Gamecocks, who entered the 2025 season with College Football Playoff aspirations. The expectation was such, as they were ranked as high as No. 10 this season.

Coming into the matchup, the Gamecocks were tied for last in the SEC in points per game (22.3) with Florida, as well as last in the conference in yards per game (310). This comes during a season in which the Gamecocks were ranked as high as No. 10 this season before beginning conference play.

Heading into Week 9, South Carolina is ranked last in both categories. They’re currently the only offense in the SEC averaging under 300 yards (297.7), and those struggles appear to have boiled over into Beamer’s postgame press conference after Week 8.

It won’t get any easier, as they have to play their next three games against some of the best the SEC has to offer. They’ll hit the road to play Alabama during Week 9 before hosting both Ole Miss and Texas A&M to round out SEC play this season. South Carolina rounds out its season with two non-conference home games against two in-state foes in Coastal Carolina and Clemson.
