South Carolina will be short-handed on defense against Georgia on Saturday, as a demoralizing update revealed starting cornerback Cam Smith will be sidelined against the Bulldogs.

“South Carolina CB Cam Smith will not play today vs. Georgia,” tweeted Jordan Reid of ESPN. “He suffered a concussion last week vs. Arkansas, per sources. A major loss for the Gamecocks defense.”

In last weekend’s loss against the Razorbacks, Smith suffered a concussion, as Reid stated. Evidently, he didn’t progress enough to be ready for an upset attempt against Georgia, and now the Gamecocks will have a huge hole to fill as they attempt to slow down quarterback Stetson Bennett.

Nevertheless, it was always going to be a tall ask for South Carolina to defeat Georgia — the Gamecocks are more than three touchdown underdogs against the Bulldogs. Still, keeping it close with Kirby Smart’s squad could provide the motivation for Shane Beamer’s program to make a little run in the coming weeks.

Time will tell if South Carolina can do so, but they have a huge mountain to climb against Georgia on Saturday.

Shane Beamer, South Carolina offense preparing for major challenge against Georgia defense

Shane Beamer and South Carolina have a tall task ahead of them as they take on No. 1 Georgia at home this weekend, especially on the offensive side of the ball. The Bulldogs defense terrorized offenses all of last season, and seem to have picked right back up where they left off this year.

Beamer spoke about his strategy regarding the offense this week in their matchup and whether he planned on throwing the whole kitchen sink at UGA’s defense.

“We want to continue to condense what we do offensively and just make sure that we’re sound,” Beamer explained. “However number of plays we have, we know as an offense how we’re gonna be able to block it and run routes against these multiple looks that we’re going to get.

“As opposed to having too many schemes, you can’t rep it all against all the stuff that you’re gonna see from them.”

Evidently, South Carolina will be prepared, but whether they did enough to pull off a shocking upset will be the real question.
