Shane Beamer gives hilarious take on throwing out first pitch at softball game

Shane Beamer is a football guy, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a fan of other sports. Heading into his second season as the head football coach at South Carolina, Beamer seems to be well-liked around the Gamecocks’ community and should be able to put a strong product on the field for the upcoming 2022 season – which should earn him even more support from the South Carolina faithful, just like attending other Gamecocks’ sporting events does.
While Beamer has been busy leading his team through spring practices over the past month, the coach was able to enjoy some time taking in another South Carolina sport on Tuesday night – softball. With the Gamecocks taking on Clemson in Columbia, Beamer was a special guest for the game and even had the opportunity to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Before attending the game on Tuesday night, Beamer met with reporters earlier in the day to provide a spring practice update – and he happened to be asked about throwing out the first pitch at the game and how excited he was for it.
“My arm is good,” Beamer said with a laugh. “Looking forward to throwing out the first pitch at softball. I was a bad – like in a good way – church league softball player back in 1999, 2000 in Blacksburg, Virginia, man. Blacksburg United Methodist Church. I know I haven’t played softball since then, but I never pitched – and it was slow-pitch church league softball, so I’ve never done fast-pitch. I’m looking forward to getting out there and supporting Coach Bev Smith and her team tonight, as well.

“I hope to throw a better pitch than what I threw at the baseball game last year. … I’m still disappointed in my first pitch at baseball. Unbecoming of me.”
Beamer’s baseball throw may have not gone as he expected, but his first pitch on the softball field went quite well.
South Carolina suffered a 3-1 loss to Clemson, but Beamer still enjoyed his time out at the ballpark.
