Spencer Rattler shares how he's settling in with new playbook at South Carolina

South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler is getting ready for his fresh start after transferring from Oklahoma. As spring ball gets underway, he has to learn a new playbook — and he seems to be adjusting well.
It helps that Rattler is familiar with his new head coach. Shane Beamer was Oklahoma’s tight ends coach from 2018-20 while Rattler was there, so he knows his quarterback’s strengths. That said, “tweaks” are being made as Beamer and offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield cater to Rattler’s strengths.
“There’s definitely a lot of new stuff I’m learning, personally,” Rattler said. “[I’m] having a great time doing it. Getting all the information, running the plays well, commanding the offense, commanding the huddle. I feel really comfortable right now.
“But there’s always those little tweaks you’ve got to do with different types of quarterbacks. So we’re definitely adding little tweaks that I’m comfortable with. That’s why I love Coach [Satterfield] and Beamer. Because they’re always open to input.”

Speaking with the media on Monday, Rattler revealed how he has matured over the past year. He laid out a couple of areas where things are different now that he is wearing a South Carolina jersey but said he will still be the same person throughout spring practice.
“I just feel more mature on the field with my preparation, how I’m going about things I want to improve in my game,” Rattler said. “All different types of areas but I’m still the same me, still got the same mindset. Confident, ready to attack and that’s been my mindset the first three or four practices and going to be my mindset going forward.”
Head coach Shane Beamer struggled to find a starting quarterback last season, with three different players getting significant playing time. Now, Rattler comes into the program and gives the Gamecocks stability at the position, even with the struggles in Norman during 2021.
Rattler has completed 70.1% of his throws throughout his career, passing for 4,595 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Being the full-time starter for Oklahoma during the 2020 season, he eclipsed 3,000 yards and threw four touchdowns for every interception. South Carolina now has one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC East, eager and determined for a new challenge.
