Spencer Rattler stresses need for consistency in 2023

Coming out of high school, Spencer Rattler was one of the most exciting quarterback recruits in the country. However, after some struggles at Oklahoma, he transferred to South Carolina where he started for the Gamecocks in 2022.
Going into the 2023 season, Rattler knows that he and the rest of the South Carolina offense need to be more consistent and that’s become a focus of the offseason.
“Yeah, consistency is the number one thing that we need to have to be successful,” Spencer Rattler said.
“So, I think just repetitions in practice, really focusing in the film room. You know, getting together a group in the offseason like we’re doing now and really focusing on the task at hand, but obviously during camp we have to perfect this stuff and be ready for week one vs. UNC.”
In 2022, Spencer Rattler led the Gamecocks to an 8-5 record and a trip to the Gator Bowl. He threw for 3,026 yards and 18 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. He also ran for three scores. Going into the 2023 season, Rattler emphasized that he’s getting more comfortable and thinks that the offense is going to be tailored to him.
Opening against North Carolina in 2023, Rattler is going up against Drake Maye in one of the early season’s most intriguing quarterback matchups.

“Yeah, I’m excited for the game. I haven’t met Drake yet,” Rattler said. “He kind of blew up on the scene last year, had a great season. Credit to him. I’m excited to get to compete versus them. It will be a fun game. Hopefully we’ll put on a show.”
What Jalen Hurts taught Spencer Rattler about transferring
When Spencer Rattler was a freshman at Oklahoma, Jalen Hurts transferred into the program from Alabama. There, Hurts proved to be a good role model to follow, winning over the team and dominating on the field on his way to the NFL. As Rattler explained, he learned a ton about being a quarterback and transferring from him.
“I learned a lot from Jalen Hurts. I came in as a freshman and watched him work and the way he did his thing. I try and learn from that and put it in my own experiences,” Rattler said.
“We have great young guys–LaNorris Sellers, Tanner Bailey–who look up to me and Luke Doty. We help them out a lot, as much as we can, and it’s like a family in there.”
