It has been a difficult time for former South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback Connor Shaw and his family. He suffered a health scare while at his son’s youth football game, which forced him to be hospitalized in the ICU. Now, even as his condition seems to improve, well-wishes are still pouring in for Shaw.

One of those who recently shared his thoughts and well wishes on Connor Shaw was his head coach at South Carolina, Steve Spurrier. This came during his weekly appearance on Another Dooley Noted Podcast.

“He had a little health problem,” Steve Spurrier said. “He did, he had a health problem. Fortunately, they got him back.”

It was reported that the 33-year-old Shaw ICU at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. That came after he collapsed while coaching his son’s game and was taken in an ambulance. Luckily, since then, he’s seen his condition improve. First, he was able to get into stable condition. Since then, he’s woken up and been able to be released from the hospital.

It would later be reported that Shaw was lying face-first in the grass and needed CPR administered on the field by a firefighter who was also at the game. Bystanders would call 911, and, luckily, he got the medical attention he needed.

“A lot of rest for Connor,” Spurrier said. “That’s always scary. Sort of a lesson in life. I mean, he had no issues prior to that. Fortunately, they had the machine to get him back going and the doctor says in time that he should be 100 percent.”

Connor Shaw played at South Carolina for Steve Spurrier from 2010 to 2013. During that time, he’d become a program legend. It’s a career that saw him set the South Carolina wins record by a quarterback while totaling 6,074 yards and 56 touchdowns over his career. He’d cap off his senior season by winning the Capital One Bowl MVP when he threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns while adding a receiving touchdown and a rushing touchdown. He would go on to be inducted into the Gamecocks’ Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021.

Together with Spurrier, Shaw was a part of some of the best teams in South Carolina history. In 1992, the Gamecocks joined the SEC. From there until Steve Spurrier was hired in 2005, they had three bowl appearances as an SEC school. Prior to joining the SEC, their last bowl had been in 1988, and they had never actually won a bowl. Under Spurrier, they’d go to a bowl in nine of 11 seasons. That includes finishing in the AP Top 25 every season Shaw was the quarterback.

After a cup of coffee in the NFL, Connor Shaw has spent some time coaching. Shaw joined Furman as a tight ends coach in 2018. He’d spend the last three games of 2020 as the South Carolina quarterbacks coach. He has also spent time as the South Carolina Director of Player Development and Director of Football Relations in the past.

Today, Connor Shaw coaches his son’s football team and watches South Carolina as an alumnus. Thankfully, it appears he’ll have the chance to continue to do both of those things.
