Tennessee‘s Cannon Peebles was ejected in the eighth inning of the Knoxville Regional championship game against Wake Forest. Peebles was struck out on a full count, and turned toward home plate as he was walking toward the dugout.

After Peebles turned back around, the home plate umpire threw him out. Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello met with the umpire on the field to get an explanation about the incident. Watch it in full below:

Because the Volunteers are heading to the Super Regionals, Peebles will be suspended for the first game against Arkansas this weekend. Context was provided after the game was over.

“Tony Vitello said the Wake Forest catcher celebrated the strikeout and Cannon Peebles said something back to him,” Eric Cain of On3’s Volquest said via X. “Said the catcher can do that and Peebles shouldn’t have. Said it was an honest mistake. Also noted he didn’t know if it had to do with a previous warning or not.”

Peebles finished the game 0-for-3 at the plate with three strikeouts and a walk. He’s batting .251 on the season, which is the lowest average in Tennessee’s everyday lineup.

Looking ahead, it’s likely that Stone Lawless will be the catcher for Tennessee during game one against Arkansas. Since Peebles was ejected in the eighth inning, Lawless was the man Vitello turned to to play behind the plate in the ninth inning. However, he did not see any plate appearances during the regional final.

Lawless has appeared in 27 games for the Volunteers during the 2025 season. 20 of those appearances have been starts. He’s currently batting .304 and has hit five home runs on the season. He’ll be a key piece to Tennessee’s efforts in the opening matchup during the Fayetteville Super Regional this weekend.

The Razorbacks swept their competition in their regional over the weekend as the No. 3 overall seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament and will look to do the same against the Volunteers this weekend. These two programs met one time during the regular season, which saw the Razorbacks win the three-game weekend series 2-1. Tennessee won the first game before Arkansas took home the next two.

These matchups served as the regular season finale, which happened in mid-May. They’ll play again less than a month later for a spot in Omaha at the 2025 College World Series.
