Bru McCoy got the green light last week to return to the football field this season. With the NCAA’s ruling on the new Tennessee wide receiver made, it’s time to focus on what he can do to impact the Volunteer’s offense in 2022.

Josh Heupel spoke about how McCoy is coming along in his transition during his press conference yesterday. He said the staff is taking it slow with McCoy to help him adjust to the offense, specifically the tempo.

“The beginning portion of practice, we were kind of methodical and ramping him up as he came off of not being quite 100% at the beginning of the summer. So we’ve built him up,” said Huepel. “He’s got a good understanding of what we’re doing. He’s operated fairly efficiently in what we’re doing offensively. With our tempo…there will be some things that we’re going to have to clean up. But he’s got a really good understanding of what we’re doing.”

McCoy is coming off a shaky start to his college football career. He sat out all last season due to a legal matter that led to a suspension from USC. That came after his freshman season where he caught 21 passes for the Trojans for 236 yards and two scores. With his transfer to Tennessee and his eligibility completely squared away, he can focus on getting back to that form.

Heupel says McCoy has done a lot to grow as a player on the field as well as a piece within the Volunteer offense. They’ve seen plenty of improvement from the former five-star that has built a lot of excitement around him during fall camp

“He’s continuing to get stronger physically. (He’s) been fundamentally and technically more sound in what we’re asking him to do. There’s a lot of positive things as we’ve gone through this training camp with him,” said Heupel.

McCoy adds yet another weapon for Josh Heupel to utilize on offense. He must get back on track first but, when and if he does, he provides another strong presence on the outside for Tennessee. The NCAA’s ruling has allowed the narrative on McCoy to shift back to the football field. The Volunteers and McCoy himself will be more than ready to see him potentially make his return this Thursday against Ball State in Tennessee’s season opener.
