Tennessee got some good news on Friday. Wide receiver Bru McCoy is going to be play this season.

The USC transfer is immediately eligible, a spokesperson confirmed to Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger. He didn’t play at all last season for the Trojans, but put up decent numbers as a freshman, totaling 236 yards and two touchdowns in 2020.

It was the second time McCoy entered the transfer portal after initially committing to Texas out of high school. That meant he had to get a waiver, per current NCAA transfer rules, and USC previously released a statement saying it did its part in the waiver application process.

McCoy was a highly touted recruit out of high school, checking in as a five-star recruit and the No. 19 player in the country from the class of 2019, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

The decision means McCoy will be eligible for Tennessee’s season opener Thursday against Ball State. That game kicks off Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. ET from Neyland Stadium.

USC releases statement regarding Bru McCoy eligibility situation

Earlier this week, USC released a statement about McCoy’s ongoing battle for immediate eligibility. The Trojans said they have been in touch with Tennessee throughout the process and wished their former wideout the best as he embarks on his new journey.

“USC has — consistent with NCAA rules — promptly and accurately responded to all requests from the University of Tennessee related to the eligibility of Bru McCoy,” the statement read. “At no point since Bru entered the transfer portal in January have we objected to him being made immediately eligible to play at Tennessee. The issue of Bru’s eligibility ultimately rests with the NCAA, and we wish him the very best.”
