Texas Tech defensive back Amier Boyd was arrested over the weekend due to reckless driving. A few days later, head coach Joey McGuire found himself at the podium addressing the situation. McGuire says the matter will be handled “internally” and similarly to others.

“It’s internal discipline actions,” McGuire said on Monday via The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. “We’ll handle it like we have any time in the past. We’ve had a couple before, not many, but we’ll handle that internally.”

Boyd just began his first season with the Red Raiders after transferring in from UTSA. Two years of eligibility remain for him despite already playing for three years. A redshirt season was utilized as a true freshman, now giving Boyd two years with Texas Tech.

“Mainly, I’ve been focused on consistency — stacking days of progress. It’s about earning the coaches’ trust, because they won’t put you on the field if they can’t rely on you,” Boyd said of his mindset after joining Texas Tech. “So every day, I’m just working to keep stacking those days. In the morning, I make sure I’m here on time, or even a little early, to prepare for the day. Then once I’m on the field, it’s about knowing my assignments, going all in, giving my best effort, and producing.”

Through two games played, Boyd has already made an impact. He recorded an interception in the season opener against Arkansas Pine-Bluff, at a time when the game was still competitive. It was the first turnover of the season for the Texas Tech defense.

Since then, praise for Boyd came from DC Shiel Wood. Confidence has certainly grown for Boyd since arriving in Lubbock, getting coached up. Wood believes the cornerback carries an incredibly high ceiling in a team with a ton of long-term expectations.

“He has made a lot of improvements since he’s been here,” said Texas Tech defensive coordinator Shiel Wood on Monday. “Coach McBath does a great job with all our corners. I think that he’s grown in the confidence of just understanding technique and assignment within the scheme that we’re playing. I think he’s got a chance to be a guy that can really play at a high level for us.”

Exactly how McGuire handles the situation, we will have to wait and see. Texas Tech takes the field once again on Saturday afternoon, going up against the Oregon State Beavers at 2:30 p.m. CT. Watching to see if Boyd is out there might be a storyline throughout.
