Texas Tech is looking to take a leap in 2025. They’ve spent the money, and now the Red Raiders have heightened expectations for this coming college football season.

Their peers recognizes the position the program is in. After winning eight games in 2024, an anonymous Big 12 coach told Athlon Sports that it would objectively be a failure if Texas Tech is unable to reach double-digit wins this time around.

“If they’re not a double-digit win team this season, it will be considered a failure,” an anonymous Big 12 coach told Athlon Sports. “It’s hard to know if that’s fair, or if spending like this is a smart long-term strategy.”

It’s no secret the Red Raiders are hoping that NIL leads to more wins for their team. That showed in the transfer portal, as Texas Tech’s transfer class is ranked first in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings.

They brought in plenty of exciting players. Wide receivers Roy Alexander and Micah Hudson come to mind, as well as offensive lineman Cash Cleveland and EDGE David Bailey. Joey McGuire is stacking his toy chest.

Moreover, Texas Tech’s schedule isn’t exactly the most daunting in the sport this season either. They start their season with showdowns against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Kent State and Oregon State, before their conference schedule kicks in.

Of course, the Red Raiders will need to strut their stuff against their fellow Big 12 opponents if they’re going to reach double-digit wins, but that was always the case. If they can enter conference play 3-0, they’ll be on their way.

“It’s time to win,” McGuire told On3’s Ari Wasserman, regarding the 2025 season. “Is there more pressure this year? 100 percent. But I’d rather be in this situation. I’d rather be in the situation I’m in than being the guy who is like, ‘man, we have to have a lot of stuff go our way.’

“There are teams deeper than others where you can withstand some things, where in the past we couldn’t sustain them. We couldn’t handle losing our left guard last year because we basically had six linemen who could play at this level and now we have nine. I love where we’re at. I’m telling you. This is better.”

Time will tell if Texas Tech can reach double-digit wins in 2025. Everything seems to be working in their favor though, as Joey McGuire will be looking to reach a new level with the Red Raiders this time around.
