After redshirting last year in his freshman season, Alabama defensive back Tre’Quon Fegans entered the transfer portal and chose USC as his next destination of choice, committing to the Trojans on Sunday. Fegans is a younger player that was a highly touted high school recruit, and On3’s JD PicKell revealed why he believes he’ll be a slam dunk signing for USC on a recent episode of ‘The Hard Count’.

“Tre’Quon Fegans, cornerback, was formerly at Alabama, a four-star guy in the 2022 cycle is headed to USC. And I have a similar policy that I talk about with Caleb Burton at Ohio State and Ohio State wide receivers as I do defensive backs at Alabama and Georgia,” PicKell said. “If you’re good enough to play corner for Nick Saban, if he wants you on his team to be a defensive back, you’re good enough for me man, you’re good enough to come play on my team. Because I’ll tell you what, Nick Saban, the defensive back room, those are his babies now, like he takes extra pride in what that secondary does.”

Saban does do his diligence in coaching up his defensive backs, playing a big part in the development of many Alabama corners that are now playing on Sundays instead of Saturdays. Fegans had one year under Saban’s tutelage, and also brings good size to the table for the Trojans.

“And Tre’Quon Fegans is a guy who is verified at us here at On3 at the high school level was 6-foot. Now you go look at Alabama and his roster height has him at 6-foot-2, so there’s a lot of jokes to be had about what Alabama was doing for their roster heights and measurements,” PicKell said. “But whatever it ends up being, either way you slice it he’s a 6-foot plus corner, fits well in modern college football the way that you gotta match up with these big wide receivers.”

USC gave up 266.5 yards per game in the air last season, an area that could definitely use some improvement this year. Fegans is only a redshirt freshman, but could help in that department, adding to a Trojans’ defensive backfield that will need all the help it can get facing some of the best quarterbacks in the country between practice and games this upcoming season.

“And regardless of how tall you want to say he is, he’s a fit for this defense and you’re gonna play against really good quarterbacks for USC. I mean you look at the schedule, Sam Hartman from Notre Dame, Bo Nix at Oregon, Michael Penix Jr. from Washington, like the work is cut out for you if you’re a secondary player at USC,” PicKell said. “So you add some more talent, add a guy whose seen some things at the SEC. I know he’s young but I really like that get for Lincoln Riley and anytime you get somebody from Saban’s roster I think that’s addition by addition.”
