Brent Pry admits Kyron Drones is 'absolutely disappointed' in how 2024 season went

The 2024 season was a disappointing one for the Virginia Tech Hokies and head coach Brent Pry. Much of that came down to the season that quarterback Kyron Drones had, which was marred by injuries and a performance that didn’t quite match expectations.
Now, with Fall Camp underway for the 2025 season, Drones is looking to address that. Certainly, Pry knows that his expectations are higher for himself than what he was able to put on the field over the course of last season.
“He absolutely is disappointed in how he played at times,” Brent Pry said. “He’s absolutely disappointed that the injury bug got him and he couldn’t finish the year, you know, the right way.”
2024 was Kyron Drones’ second season in a Virginia Tech uniform. He’d ultimately play in nine games last year, completing 60.7 percent of his passes for 1,562 yards and 10 touchdowns to six interceptions. He also rushed for 336 yards and another six touchdowns on the ground. A foot injury last season would cost him three games. He would end up also needing what Pry described as a “procedure” during the offseason, though he didn’t give any further details on said procedure.
Along with the disappointing season for Kyron Drones personally, it was a frustrating season for the Hokies as a program. In what was Brent Pry’s third season as the head coach, Virginia Tech went 6-7, losing their bowl game. That was a slight step back from 7-6 with a bowl win from the year before. It also was not the leap to potentially competing for the ACC, which many fans had hoped to see.

Now, Brent Pry has made several changes looking to correct that. That includes bringing in Philip Montgomery to be your team’s new offensive coordinator. There, the hope is that he can have a connection to Kyron Drones that helps him reach his potential.
“First of all, I wanted somebody that would give us the best opportunity, us and Kyron [Drones], to reach all of our potential and then some,” Pry said. “And when you look at Phil’s track record with quarterbacks, it’s hard to argue that he’s not the right guy to do that. And secondly, to bring a play caller in here that has a proven plan that he believes in and is super knowledgeable about — you’re not reinventing the wheel every week and trying to find answers and solutions. We can invest and buy into a plan and a system and have answers. Phil provides all of that. He’s an experienced play caller. He’s a veteran quarterback developer, and he’s an outstanding person. Feel very fortunate to have him with us.”
Kyron Drones, Brent Pry, and the rest of the Hokies are going to be tested early. Virginia Tech opens with a neutral-site game against South Carolina. A win there would be a statement that the Hokies did take those strides forward this offseason.
