Brent Pry provides update on Grant Wells' recovery

Virginia Tech quarterback Grant Wells was injured in the fourth quarter of a game against Purdue on Sept. 9 and hasn’t played since, depriving the Hokies of their starter at the game’s most important position.
While Wells has made progress in recent weeks, it still hasn’t been enough to justify a return.
“Unfortunately I would tell you I don’t think he was much closer this (past) week,” coach Brent Pry said. “There was some progress, but not enough to get excited about.”
Dealing with a leg injury, Wells has been sidelined while the team dropped games to Rutgers (35-16) and Marshall (24-17), both on the road. His veteran leadership could have made a significant difference.
Playing in Wells’ stead was Kyron Drones, who has gone 41-of-75 passing for 389 yards and a touchdown, against one interception. But Drones has also added some ability with his legs, rushing for 164 yards and a pair of scores.
Still, Virginia Tech would love to get back its veteran quarterback. Pry is waiting to see what happens this week.

“I think he was a little bit better Sunday,” Pry said on Tuesday. “Pushed the envelope more. I think he was a little better Sunday. So today is a big day, I think, to see where he can get.”
Pry, who began his career at Marshall before transferring to Virginia Tech, has passed for 8,288 yards and 48 touchdowns in his career, while throwing 33 interceptions.
In the 2022 campaign at Virginia Tech, Pry went 196-of-332 passing for 2,171 yards, with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also ran for 212 yards and six scores.
Virginia Tech will return to action this weekend looking to snap a three-game losing skid. The Hokies are set to host Pittsburgh in a clash that will kick off at 8 p.m. ET with a broadcast on the ACC Network.
