Gabe Williams injury: Ambulance takes Virginia Tech LB off field in scary scene

It was a scary scene on Saturday for Virginia Tech freshman linebacker Gabe Williams. Williams was making a routine tackle late in the fourth quarter, but when he was on the ground after the play, he tried to get up but couldn’t. Williams immediately recognized something was wrong and then trainers and medical staff tended to him for several minutes. A stretcher was brought out onto the field, before he was eventually loaded up into an ambulance with an air cast on his leg.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney went over to check on Williams before he left the field. Virginia Tech tacked on another score with 1:43 left in the game, but it was too little, too late. Collin Schlee connected on his second touchdown pass of the season, cutting the Clemson lead to 24-14.

The Virginia Tech defense held pretty strong in the first half, as the Hokies led 7-0 at halftime. The Clemson offense managed to get things going in the second half and there wasn’t much the Hokies’ defense could do. The Tigers scored all 24 of their points in the second half, with their offense waking up when they needed it to happen. Clemson running back Phil Mafah had over 100 rushing yards.
Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones was benched in the game in the fourth quarter. He struggled to get much of anything going. And the Hokies’ offense performed much better with Schlee in the game. But Drones was seen with a special sleeve on his right leg and in the second half, he had a brace on his right leg.
