Michael Vick addresses rumors connected to Virginia Tech head coach opening

As rumors swirl following Virginia Tech’s decision to part ways with Brent Pry, Hokies legend Michael Vick spoke out. Now the head coach at Norfolk State, he made it clear he’s staying focused on the task at hand.
Vick is in his first season at Norfolk State, marking his first-ever college coaching job. The Spartans are 1-2 through the early part of the year, with the lone victory coming over Virginia State. Most recently, they fell to Rutgers 60-10 on Saturday.

All the while, Virginia Tech is starting its coaching search, leading to questions about whether Vick could end up back in Blacksburg. However, he said he wants to stay locked in on the season ahead at Norfolk State and hopes his players do the same amid the noise.
“This team’s got to follow my lead,” Vick said. “As of right now, man, I’m dialed in here. I’m dialed in with my coaches, my players. I’ve got to continue to lead, I’ve got to continue to get better each and every day. My primary focus right now until the end of time is going to be what we do here at Norfolk State. That’s all we can focus on right now. I hope they’re not reading any newspaper clippings or looking into what’s happening on the social pages and all that, because I don’t do that.
“We’ve got Sacred Heart this week. That’s the most important thing in our lives right now, outside of family and our faith. I’m looking forward to having a great week of practice, getting back at it. We’re breaking down film right now, still, from last week to get ready for this week.”

Virginia Tech parted ways with Pry on Sunday following the Hokies’ 45-26 loss to Old Dominion, marking a third straight defeat to start the season. During his three-plus seasons with the program, Pry had a 16-24 overall record, including a 10-13 mark in ACC play, as Virginia Tech made back-to-back bowl games under his watch.
As the school’s coaching search begins, sources told On3’s Pete Nakos some Virginia Tech booster pushed Michael Vick to get coaching experience. It also wouldn’t be a surprise to see him become a serious name in future Hokies coaching searches.
Philip Montgomery is taking over for Pry as Virginia Tech’s interim head coach. The Hokies are preparing for a Week 4 matchup against Wofford before ACC play begins.
