Former Oregon, Auburn and South Carolina quarterback Robby Ashford has won the starting job at Wake Forest. Deacons Illustrated’s Conor O’Neill reported the news on Sunday evening..

Ashford has logged 11 career starts but will get a chance to make a more lasting impact for the Demon Deacons. He won the job after a competition during fall camp.

He will make his first start against Kennesaw State on Friday night. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network.

Robby Ashford is quite well traveled at this point. He initially began his career at Oregon as a promising four-star recruit, rated as the No. 318 overall prospect in the nation and the No. 23 quarterback in the 2020 class.

He did not see action and took a redshirt in his first season with the Ducks in 2020. He also did not see action in 2021 and, following the season, he opted to look elsewhere for playing time. He transferred to Auburn.

He was a big part of the Auburn offense during the 2022 season, appearing in all 12 games while making nine starts. he was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year.

During that campaign, Robby Ashford’s most prolific to date, he went 123-of-250 passing for 1,613 yard sand seven touchdowns, though he also threw seven interceptions. Ashford ran for 710 yards and seven scores, as well.

But he lost his grip on the starting job going into the 2023 season amid a coaching change. He would go just 14-of-27 for 145 yards and two touchdowns (with two interceptions), while rushing for 217 yards and five scores. He opted to transfer again, this time to South Carolina.

Robby Ashford spent only one season in South Carolina, playing a backup role to LaNorris Sellers. He came in for a bit of work when Sellers was injured early in the year.

He finished the season 23-of-32 passing for 324 yards and two touchdowns. He boosted his completion percentage considerably and did not throw an interception. Meanwhile, he also ran for 227 yards and two touchdowns.

With Sellers firmly entrenched as the starter, though, Robby Ashford once again transferred looking for a starting opportunity. After a strong fall camp at Wake Forest, he has now found that chance.
