Washington outfielder AJ Guerrero breaks Huskies' career home run record with his 43rd blast

Washington has a new career home run king. Outfielder AJ Guerrero hit his 43rd on Friday in the Big Ten Tournament against USC, breaking the Huskies’ mark and further etching his name into the record books.
He’s also the all-time hits leader for Washington, and he’s now tied for the record for RBIs, as well. When it comes to hitting, there has been nobody on Guerrero’s level in the history of the program. What an accomplishment! Check out the video of the moment below.
Prior to the home run, Guerrero was tied with Ed Erickson and Kyle Conley at 42 dingers apiece. Now, he’ll be atop the leaderboard, as he finishes up an incredible career with the Huskies on the diamond.
Prior to Friday’s game, Washington fell to Penn State in their first chance at the Big Ten Tournament. The Nittany Lions jumped ahead with a 5-0 lead entering the eighth inning before the Huskies finally got on the board, but it wasn’t enough to overcome in pool play on Wednesday.
PSU junior southpaw Ryan DeSanto scattered three hits across 5.2 innings of work for the win, while Ryan Weingartner belted a solo home run and Bryce Molinario added a two-RBI sacrifice fly as part of a three-run sixth inning to pull away for good. Washington was led offensively by the aforementioned Guerrero, who finished 4-for-5 at the plate with a two-RBI home run in the eighth before adding a RBI-single in the ninth for the Huskies’ only runs.

Friday’s game is a huge one, as USC also fell to Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament in pool play. On Thursday, the Nittany Lions broke the opening tie with an RBI single from Molinaro in the top of the first inning. The Trojans matched the run in the bottom of the following inning in a similar fashion — an RBI single by Brayden Dowd, this time with the bases loaded.
Nate Voss would step to the plate with two away in the top of the ninth inning, and would proceed to belt a breaking ball to deep left field for the no-doubt, go-ahead home run to give the Nittany Lions the lead. Bat flip included. It was the eighth home run of the season for Voss as the Nittany Lions took Pool B.
With both teams having a loss on their resume, a win would keep their dreams alive. Perhaps AJ Guerrero’s homer will be the lifeblood Washington needs to move forward in the Big Ten Tournament.
