Rich Rodriguez reveals West Virginia will play two quarterbacks vs. Robert Morris, during 2025 season

The West Virginia Mountaineers are ready to embrace a new era under head coach Rich Rodriguez. That new era is going to come with a new quarterback too, but who that quarterback is going to be remains to be seen.
Recently, as the regular season hurdles closer, Rodriguez was asked about using multiple quarterbacks in a given game. He quickly confirmed that it won’t just happen against Robert Morris, but there’s a possibility it happens throughout the season, saying, “Yeah. I bet that will be the case every week.”
There are a few different quarterbacks battling to be the West Virginia signal caller. Nicco Marchiol has been at West Virginia for the last three seasons. Charlotte transfer Max Brown and Texas A&M transfer Jaylen Henderson also came to Morgantown this season. The younger players on the roster include Scotty Fox and Khalil Wilkins.
“Nicco has got the most experience, him and Jaylen Henderson both have the most experience played Power Four football,” Rodriguez said. “And you can see it he has a feel for the game a little bit he understands a lot of things quicker because he’s been around. He’s got good arm strength; he’s a bigger guy but he’ll run. He’s a willing runner, he may not be fast, but he’s got some athletic ability and can run.”
For his part, Marchiol completed 66.1 percent of his passes for 434 yards and five touchdowns to two interceptions last season. That came at West Virginia, where he was the backup quarterback behind Garrett Greene. Henderson, meanwhile, completed 67.9 percent of his passes for 715 yards and six touchdowns to two interceptions. Rodriguez would also note that Henderson is improving in the offense. He said, “I’ve seen him get better and better and more comfortable.”

Max Brown completed 46.2 percent of his passes for 561 yards and three touchdowns to six interceptions last season at Charlotte. That’s given him some experience, and Rodriguez has made sure to praise his experience in the past.
As far as the younger quarterbacks are concerned, Wilkins has been limited due to a shoulder issue. For his part, however, Fox has already impressed the coaching staff too.
“Scotty has got one of the quickest releases of any quarterback I’ve ever had,” Rodriguez said. “He has a great release, great size and can run. He’s been really impressive… All five of these guys are getting reps now and it’s been a fun thing to do and the competition has been really good.”
There’s a chance that West Virginia will play multiple quarterbacks this season. There’s also a chance that the Mountaineers play all of the quarterbacks, which Rodriguez would also confirm at the press conference. Through all of that, West Virginia still doesn’t have a set starting quarterback Robert Morris on August 30th.
