As a College Recruit

Pure cover corner with size and top-end athleticism. One of the best press-man corners in the 2023 cycle. Surrendered just 3 catches as a junior. Possesses solid length which allows for him to initiate contact with ease and consistently go up and play the ball at its highest point. Has a developed build at around 5-foot-11, 190 pounds. A patient corner who is rarely beat off the line of scrimmage. Has the recovery speed to get back in phase if needed. Ran a blistering 10.65 second 100 meter time as a junior and posted a 22.12 second mark in the 200 meters in 2021. A physical and willing downhill player who can make tackles in the backfield. Embraces matchups against top receivers on Friday nights and turned in a very strong showing against top 100 receiver Johntay Cook as a senior. Does not have natural ball skills, though he did improve his ball production as a senior.

Calvin Simpson-Hunt is a physically-developed corner with top-shelf athleticism and ability to stay attached in press-man coverage. That skill set and build remind us of Mackensie Alexander. The size and skill sets are similar at the same stage. Simpson-Hunt had more verified speed as a high school prospect.

Calvin Simpson-Hunt shuts down top 100 receiver

Charles Power

A rivalry game in Texas provided a unique best-on-best matchup between two top 100 prospects with Ohio State cornerback commit Calvin Simpson-Hunt manning up on Texas wide receiver pledge Johntay Cook II. We zeroed in on this head-to-head matchup, as it can be difficult to see top cornerbacks truly tested in a single-game sample at the high school level. That was not the case here.Simpson-Hunt lined up across from Cook for most of the game and pitched a clean sheet against the talented pass-catcher. Cook finished the game with one catch for -4 yards. Simpson-Hunt primarily worked in man-press coverage with no safety help. The 5-foot-11, 187-pounder used his high-end, length, movement skills and technical ability to essentially take Cook out of the game. Cook was targeted at least five times with Simpson-Hunt in coverage, including twice on the goal line. The Longhorn pledge was able to create slight separation on a few vertical routes, but the matchup clearly went the way of Simpson-Hunt. The Ohio State commit was in Cook’s hip pocket all night and showed why On3 considers him to be one of – if not the top – press corners in the 2023 cycle.

Calvin Simpson-Hunt a big riser in updated On300

Charles Power

Simpson-Hunt, who is committed to Ohio State, rose to No. 42 from No. 107 in the On300. On3 ranks the Dallas-Fort Worth area prospect higher than others in the industry for good reason. The long-armed cornerback consistently makes plays on the ball and flashes quick recovery speed when initially beaten. Simpson Hunt’s ability to stay attached to quick receivers in a talented school district and metropolitan area stands out. The 5-foot-11.5, 187 pound defensive back is also more than willing to be physical to stop running backs. He’s quick as well, running the 100-meter-dash in 10.65 seconds this spring.
